On-Set Production – ‘One More Day’ 2nd Location Recce

08-11-2023

For the short film ‘One More Day’ we revisited our secured location of Barnton Bunker in Corstorphine on Sunday 5th November. The purpose of this recce was to select a backup room to film in, take dimensions of our preferred room, and plan out the lighting and shots in the space itself.

Alfie took measurements of the room so we could later make a detailed lighting plan to reduce set-up times and adhere to a shooting schedule. Saskia and I discussed her plans for production design and how that would interact with my shot list, particularly in regard to hanging up bed sheets, posters, and newspapers. Alfie and I decided on a few more establishing shots around the bunker after we re-toured it with Rob who lives on-site and is working to preserve and restore the bunker.

Despite the fact we had planned our establishing shots prior to this second recce, we explored more of the bunker and found fantastic new options. As Saturday is dedicated to dressing the set and shooting the establishing shots without the actors present, we decided to ask Finlay if our shooting schedule allowed for additional shots to be added in. After discussing estimated set-up times, Finlay and I agreed we have more than enough time to get a couple more shots and decide in the edit which ones we prefer and suit the film more.

I’m glad we were able to revisit the bunker prior to our shoot, but wish we had taken a camera to block out our shots with stand-ins in the space itself. In the future I would take a camera with me on location recces to ensure we are getting the most out of them.

The goats they have on-site were a highlight. The view from the hill atop the bunker was also cool. Overall a successful recce.
