Film Narrative 2 – Final Idea
Film Narrative 2The Final Idea
After reworking our idea multiple times, we came to the idea to make into the final film. With the advice of Kate, our screenwriting lecturer, we were able to see the connective and narrative issues with our original idea, which was an amalgamation of Fionntan’s idea and my idea originally. Whilst the two ideas were strong and could both function as stand-alone concepts, they didn’t work when combined together and lacked a tangible link and narrative causality.
To put together the new idea, I drafted up a Word document with the story outline for Fionntan to refer to when writing the script, after lengthy group discussions.
Character Breakdown
- Characters: Alibhe and Oisin.
- Alibhe is the younger sister of Oisin, who is her older brother.
- Alibhe is an avoidant type, dismissive of reality and the situation she finds herself in, yet tries to remain optimistic. Compared to Oisin, she is more idealistic and would rather believe in an easy lie than the hard truth.
- Oisin is more confrontational, and would prefer to acknowledge the situation at hand. Despite this, he knows Alibhe is in a fragile state and approaches the subject of mental health tentatively. Oisin may be ignorant to Alibhe’s mental state, but senses something is unsettled within her and tries to be an escape of normality for her.

Research / Pre-Visualisation Work
Cinematography
Ben M is doing a mood-board with stills from films we plan to take visual inspiration from. When this is complete, I will add it to this post.
Location
For locations, we are looking to find a room at Craiglockhart Campus we can dress to appear similar to a hospital waiting room or a patient waiting room. During pre-production, we plan to source inspiration online and gather any props needed to create a believable hospital environment.
Script Research
In order to accurately and fairly present a mental disorder with symptoms of hallucinations, we plan to conduct research into which disorder has this as a symptom, and decide how to represent the subject matter of mental health in the script. To ensure our film and script is inoffensive and accurate, we will incorporate ethics into all aspects of production and continually re-evaluate the character of Alibhe. Molly, our director, has an abundance of background knowledge in mental health, so we will consult with her.
Group Dynamics
As a group we have worked well together so far, and everyone has contributed to the pre-production process and participated in Zoom meetings we hold on Sundays to review the week’s work. In order to allow other people to grow and learn, I have stepped back from my usual role as director or writer and am instead the producer for the group. Whilst this role doesn’t interest me greatly as I find it too administrative and tedious for my liking, I will do my best to thoroughly oversee each production stage and ensure the film is the best it can be.
I have faith that everyone in this group will do their best in their chosen role and continue to work towards creating a film we can all be proud of.
